My approach to teaching voice--either to an individual or to a group--begins with the experience of the singers. All good singing starts with physical and emotional comfort. Physically, I teach singers how their bodies create sound, how to free all the muscles that aren't necessary for producing sound, and how to change the way their bodies make sound through imagination. Emotionally, I help singers to love their voices even on rough days, and how to care for their voices and themselves. Comfort with both of these facets of vocal production lead inevitably to more beautiful singing.
Technically speaking, I teach a classical bel-canto style. This basic technique of producing clean, easy tone is applicable to singing any kind of music and will ensure long-term vocal health so that the singer will have a strong, beautiful voice as long as they want to keep singing. I don't teach a belty pop or broadway style since I don't believe it's the path to lifelong singing, but healthy classical training will allow you to sing whatever music you like for the rest of your life.
